What an absolute waste of time, resource and money.
We have 2 summers ahead of us of extreme heat and drought and you want to build an ice-skating rink? Completely tone deaf

Great! Nowhere I’d rather be on an extremely hot and dry summers day than somewhere really cold and wet! Awesome idea - can’t wait! Thankyou Bayside Council!
Fantastic idea. Sydney had 2 rinks close and one year. This couldn't come soon enough. There is a large community of hockey players, figure skaters and general ice skating enthusiasts who are left with hardly any rinks to go to. Sydney is crying out for a new rink.
Would be amazing to have a quality rink in the area, can’t wait !
Don’t worry about the short-sightedness of D Smith, with a small amount of research you can see that there is a huge demand for ice sports in this country, a country that has always over-achieved in sports worldwide, on and off the ice.
With multiple rinks closed in Sydney in the past few years, the rapid increase in people taking up ice sports and the ever-growing popularity of ice sports in this country, the demand for suitable rinks could not be met with better timing for a community to adopt such a proposal.
You can only look at the many leagues currently operating in Sydney that are faced with scheduling games on the central coast and Newcastle weekly due to the lack of facilities in Sydney to see that the timing of this DP could not be more suitable.
Technical components of the build are important, no doubt these will be reviewed carefully to ensure suitability. If done well, casual and public ice sessions, private training and community sports will flow continually into the facility 7 days a week.
God speed to the proposer.
Hope this goes ahead. There is a high demand for ice time in Sydney due to the closure of 2 rinks last year. Clubs are struggling due to limited ice time, In all forms of ice sports. Seasons are. Ring limited so additional ice availability will benefit all
With two rink closures in Sydney in the last year this could not come soon enough. Ice hockey alone has 20 teams less in competition than last season due to lack of ice time available, not to mention the multiple other ice sports left with nowhere to train or compete.
Fantastic! Sydney needs another ice rink desperately!!! The community of figure skaters, hockey players, speed skaters and synchro skaters often travel for miles and wake up at 4am to get the chance to train as all the rinks are so busy due to the closure or Penrith and the temporary closure of Canterbury.
Also the public! And local children need more physical outlets than ever with youth mental health plummeting!! Please make it as big as you can! size is everything!
Please yes, we need this. Having to travel an hour or more to train and or play games is ridiculous.
Some of the games and times are so late just to accommodate everyone is crazy and in the end a safety concern when driving late at night.
As an ex roller derby player that quit due to the travel and training times and thought this would be a nice swap over and was sadly wrong.
This will be welcome and great for the area. Since they knocked down the indoor go cart track/laser tag for apartments there is nothing else for people to do indoors.
You can't just keep putting up apartments everywhere with no other infrastructure and spaces for people to enjoy themselves.
I think this is a fantastic idea. There are not enough ice rinks in Sydney and with a growing population in the area it will be great to have something to do that’s not playing soccer on artificial turf.
There is public transport nearby, and I think it will be a wonderful addition to the local area.
Further to my previous comment, it should be part of the development approval that the rink be required to install solar energy to offset the environmental impact of keeping the rink at the correct temperature.
Since the rinks were built at Canterbury and Macquarie, technology has improved so the rink should be required to adopt systems that reduce the environmental impact. With a roof the size of an ice rink, they should be able to generate and store more than enough power via solar.
What a fantastic idea for people in the inner west, and anyone especially missing the Canterbury rink that so many grew up with! Will be great for summer too!
This is a much needed community resource and a great use of the site. Also a nice change from the endless bland blocks of soulless units lining the highway
Fantastic there is a definite lack of rinks in Sydney in comparison to other states and this will go towards adressing the issue. We have currently only 2 rinks in Sydney that can hold full contact ice hockey games and only one that can hold elite figure skating comps.
Currently we have ice hockey, figure skating and Broomball all calling for ice time to even be able to train let alone have games. My sons senior team doesnt train together and has had no games for the past month because there is simply not the ice available. Let alone finding ice time to train at an elite level which is currently non existent. NSW didn't even have the ice availability to hold any of the National Ice Hockey Tournaments this year.
This new development will be a start at addressing the issue. It won't just benefit local ice sports but also State wide
What wonderful and welcome news!! We’ve had 2 rink closures in the last year in the sydney area and our ice sports are really struggling with limited ice time to address the increased demands on the remaining 3 local (Sydney) rinks. My daughter’s synchro team (who represented Australia at the 2023 world championships in Lake Placid & are hoping to qualify for 2024) is currently having to train at 4.30am sessions an hour away in North Ryde, and whatever other ice time they can get as far away as Newcastle, Erina and Canberra. My son plays ice hockey and this sport is also severely suffering without available ice time. We really need this rink for our athletes and for the general community, and it will be a huge bonus to have it in our local council area. A heartfelt thank you to the developers and to Bayside!!
So excited for this! As an ice skater, there's not enough rinks in Sydney, or NSW really. We have had so many rink closures resulting in early starts for games, and even some rinks declining team sports as we can simply not fit into their schedule. There's been a decline in those interested in the sport and skill this offers. Additionally it's great for school sports. I really hope it's a full size rink!!!!!
Agree that using an enormous amount of energy to create this artificial environment, in this city, is totally mad. There aren't many ice rinks in Sydney because this is not a place that it is in any way natural to form ice. Complaining about the lack of space for ice sports is like living in Alice Springs and complaining that you can't surf. Why not take up hobbies that are in better harmony with the environment around you?
Anyway, rising energy costs will shut it down eventually, as probably happened to these other rinks. In the meantime, to ensure it makes a positive contribution to the suburb, it should have stringent controls on the amount of car parking and how it advertises this (eg, website clearly stating that on-site parking is only available for disabled people and that street parking is expensive and impossible to find). Make the connection to the train station as straightforward and well-marked as possible. Maybe a new bus stop right at the rink. People arriving by public transport will revitalise the area; people arriving by car will just cause more traffic chaos.
I think it’s an great idea to have one more rink built in Sydney with Sydney losing two rinks last year ice time is very hard to gain
This is fantastic news, ignore the closed mindedness of those who say “what a waste”. Sydney has had 2 rinks close and Canterbury still undergoing repairs this couldn't come soon enough. There is a large community of hockey players, figure skaters, speed skaters and general ice skating enthusiasts who are left with hardly any rinks to go to around Sydney area.
Ice hockey is such a great sport that I am surprised more Australians as it has everything we love about sports. It is fast, physical and engaging. My son even wrote his public school speech on “Why we need more ice rinks in Sydney” last year.
Good on you Bayside Council
Living nearby and utilising the Ice Rink in Alexandria which is always full I think this is a great addition to our local community. It is fantastic to see a business like this being built in a time when most developers want to just knock down buildings and put up apartments. This is actually giving residents a healthy activity to pursue.
Great idea . Hope this goes through asap.
Sydney desperately needs this rink for recreation and competitive ice sports. It can’t come soon enough!
I’m thrilled to see these plans. Well done to those who are working on providing Sydney figure and hockey skaters another place to train and another place that I’m sure will inspire many kids to take up the sports. It’s a great location. Can’t wait to see this come to fruition.
