This is just not appropriate in this space. There is a children's kindergarten right there and this building would be overlooking where the children are out playing.
It would be so out of place in this space, right in the main street where us locals do our shopping, go for a coffee or a meal in one of the lovely restaurants. And the big thing, this building blocks the view out to the beach and would change the atmosphere of our town completely. This would also take away parking spaces for us when we want to shop or eat out, where would everyone park their cars, it would be a complete mess.

So surprised this development is back for discussion again! This side of the road should be kept free of development. It is not in keeping with approaches used by coastal towns around Australia not to develop the beach side of the road. Agree with other comments re: the impact on the kindergarten both during and after the build.
It will destroy the outlook from the top end of the shopping strip across the bay. An outlook enjoyed by all will be given to the chosen few who own an apartment.
The apartment built next to the pub is an example of whether Portarlington is ready for this level of development. Long drawn out building process, inability to sell, low consideration for retail options, limited consideration during building process. The building approach to the renovated pub was considered and inclusive.
The group behind this development care little for the town as seen in their response to the community during consultation sessions.
These new plans differ little to the originals.
Please reconsider planning options for the north side of Newcombe St.
I fully support considered development for Portarlington but it is important to have public amenity front mind for the future of the town, it’s role as a tourist destination and the community who choose to live here
I have had the chance to look at both the old plans for this development and the new plans, the changes seem significant enough and with the building height reduced by the one level I feel that it will now fit in well on this side of the road. Therefore I am all for this development to go ahead..
I don’t think it’s viable for Portarlington without development, it needs to grow and without it the shops and businesses cannot survive..
I’m not sure what all the talk about blocking the view has to do with anything as no one owns the view of the bay and in many spots it isn’t visible and in future plans there will be a two story customer terminal, restaurants, marina office etc etc built on the foreshore for the ferry customers which will be blocking the water views ..
I am for this development to go ahead…
Strongly oppose this building plan. There is no need or demand for a high rise apartment block on the north side of Portarlington village. (or the south for that matter as indicated by the lengthy period of time that it took to sell and rent apartments/shops etc by same developer). Completely not in sinc with the street scape. I am a long term Portarlington resident and rate paying home owner. Please do not approve this planning development. It is not appropriate in any way in my opinion.
What struck me when looking at the overhead view is that this development site is right in the middle of a number of heritage buildings- both on the same side of the street and opposite.
1: It is totally inappropriate to have a development this size on the foreshore side of the main street and a precedent of this nature should never be contemplated..
2: Also inappropriate to have a development of this scale and design that detracts from the numerous heritage buildings in the vicinity as well.
3: Not to mention the impact on the adjacent pre-school- both during construction and afterwards.
As a relatively new (and young) resident of Portarlington I support this development.
I agree that any development in town needs to protect the character and celebrate heritage of the town (all development should be respectful). The use of natural finishes and height restrictions to the old post office enables this. Anyone looking at the plans will see that sensitive treatment is used on the kinder side of the building.
I disagree with any local who is adamant against development for the sake of their dislike of change - investment in the town supports the local economy.
I was standing at the bakery waiting for a coffee on the weekend and encourage anyone else to do the same. There are no water views - the building is an eye sore and it's time to do something about it.
I fully support this development in its amended form. It will replace the old post office which is currently an eyesore in the Main Street, and at the moment there are no bay views from across the road opposite the site. The developer has changed the plans to make the development more sympathetic to the surrounds and to meet community feedback. Change in the community is good and this development is only small compared to some of the other local developments proposed for Portarlington. Remember, nothing stays the same forever, change is good.
The new plans have reduced the height and bulk of the building. The design picks up the old post office next door. I support this development. The old asbestos ridden building which currently sits there is an eyesore and needs to go. Something will be built on this site. City of Greater Geelong has been asked to buy the site as has State Government and there has been opportunity but nothing eventuated. So it's not going to be turned into a garden or a Community Hub. Therefore I think its time to be realistic and support this development.
I realIy object to this development at 49 Newcombe Street, Portarlington. I cannot understand why we are going through this again. As far as I can see there are no real changes to the original plans. The height has not really changed that much and it doesn’t compliment the surrounding area. In actual fact I believe it will be an absolute “I saw”. We don’t need this type of development on the Northside of Newcombe Street.
I can’t believe this has raised its ugly head again! This building is in appropriate for Portarlington’s Main Street, it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the Street Scape. (I thought you couldn’t build dwellings on that side of the street) GCOG?? Has the law changed again to suit the council?
This isn’t the Gold Coast, we live here for the serenity and not for big over powering buildings that are being built here in our village. I say no for this construction. Bring back the garden as it once was so every one can enjoy it.
